"The Progress Bar"
"The Progress Bar" is a community STEM publication featuring writing, art, and games 100% produced by and for students in grades 3-12. The goal of this project is to bring together FBISD students of all ages to share their opinions and ideas on a vast suite of topics relevant to the world today. We publish new editions every other month, each focusing on a unique and niche theme ranging from artificial intelligence and climate change to neuroscience and epidemiology. Our magazine makes science digestible for kids, adults, and everyone else in between. You don't have to be a nerd to be curious.
Summer Camps
One of our favorite things to do in the summer is hangout with the kids in our community and have some scientific scholarly fun! One of our most successful programs has been the "Doctor Who? Doctor YOU!" summer camp, which takes place at a variety of libraries across the Fort Bend district. This 4-week long program introduces kids from grades 3-6 to the fundamentals of biology, presented alongside awesome experiments and puzzles where students get to work through actual medical cases and share their diagnoses. Due to the crazy events of 2020, we've also launched a brand new virtual summer learning program, which you should totally go check out right now!
Contests
We host a variety of contests to help our community get a little creative and have some fun along the way. We all have a competitive streak, and a little healthy competition happens to be one of the best ways to learn. Our contests range from virtual inventathons and photo contests to optical illusion design competitions and neighborhood quiz bowls. A lot of our contests overlap with our summer camps, so be sure to check those out too! You can access our most recent contest below.
Resources
Check out some of the materials we use during our camps, weekend events, and seminars! You can use these materials to host your own activities for kids in your community or just browse through them for fun! We have a large set of PowerPoints and corresponding activities/curriculum for a variety of topics in STEM as well as information for advocacy and awareness on a range of relevant issues. If you're looking for a study guide for an upcoming test or notes on a topic you want to self study, we also a compilation of all of the study materials and flashcard sets we've curated over the years.
